What does Integrative Medicine Treat?

Integrative Medicine brings together the best of mainstream medicine with complementary therapies to support wellness and healing. Natural medicines and mind-body therapies are prescribed to promote healing, enhance vitality, and fill in the gaps of conventional medicine. Standard medical treatment is used whenever necessary and appropriate. Integrative Medicine has much to offer anyone seeking greater well being, and is particularly valuable for folks with:

Cancer (during and after treatment)

Stress symptoms

Pain

GI problems

Heart and blood pressure problems

Medication intolerance

Chronic symptom burden

Integrative Medicine brings careful attention to food choice and lifestyle. Quality nutritional supplements and herbal medicines are prescribed on an individual basis. Care plans often include mind-body training, and referrals for acupuncture and bodywork.

Dr. Rosenzweig provides office consultations and participates in many, major insurance plans. Please check with the receptionist for the most current list of plans. Telephone consultations and some mind-body therapies are not covered by insurance.

Dr. Rosenzweig is not a primary care provider, although he is available to treat many general medical issues, both acute and chronic. He does not have an in-patient hospital practice; patients who require admission to a hospital are referred to an appropriate specialist.

Pilates is a method of exercise and physical movement designed to stretch, strengthen, and balance the body. With systematic practice of specific exercises coupled with focused breathing patterns, Pilates has proven itself invaluable not only as a fitness endeavor itself, but also as an important adjunct to professional sports training and physical rehabilitation of all kinds. Practiced faithfully, Pilates yields numerous benefits such as increased lung capacity and circulation through deep, healthy breathing. Strength and flexibility, particularly of the abdomen and back muscles, coordination-both muscular and mental, are key components in an effective Pilates program. Posture, balance, and core strength are all heartily increased. Bone density and joint health improve, and many experience positive body awareness for the first time. Pilates teaches balance and control of the body, and that capacity spills over into other areas of one's life.

Before pharmaceuticals and even the use of Acupuncture needles, herbal remedies were used to heal and balance the human body. Chinese herbs have shown their effectiveness under the scrutiny of both empirical study and modern clinical trials. These herbs can be used to augment the treatment of a particular imbalance, working together or sometimes in place of Acupuncture and other medicines. Unlike most drugs, the herbs are put into complex formulas that are specific to an individual's condition, not just any one symptom. Additionally, the formulas are so well balanced that they hardly ever cause side effects.

Do I have to cook it and will it taste bad?

In the past, patients had to purchase a large bag of raw herbs, cook them for a half hour every day, and drink bitter teas. Though that option is still available to you, convenient patent medicines have become readily available and are much less of a hassle. These take high quality ingredients and put them into small, round pills that are easy to take and taste much better - no brewing or simmering needed.

Herbal remedies are usually taken a few times a day and can be used for as little as one month, to as long as one year. Herbal consultations can be included in an Acupuncture visit with the only extra charge being the cost of the herbs themselves. They can also be done separately, and unlike Acupuncture, follow-ups are only needed every other week. Herbal medicines are usually immediately available following a consultation, however, some may take a few days to prepare due to the individual nature of every formula.

Are herbs expensive?

Unlike prescription drugs, herbs are extremely cost effective. Herbal medicine that lasts about 30 days can range between $30 - $40. This is similar to the average co-pay of a prescription drug plan, with the added benefit that you won't be on them for the rest of your life.

Therapeutic massage is a time-honored, hands-on healing art that treats the body's soft tissues using a combination of strokes, applied pressure, and stimulation to acupressure points. Massage increases circulation, facilitating the removal of toxins and wastes, and improving overall bodily function and mental clarity. By reducing stiffness and tension in the muscles, massage allows for greater mobility, promoting a sense of ease. The release of endorphins that occurs naturally during massage, combined with the nurturing aspect of touch therapy, generates an enhanced sense of well-being.

What types of problems does massage therapy address?

Most types of musculoskeletal and chronic pain, as well as various organic conditions, can be treated with therapeutic massage.

What are the common types of therapeutic massage and how do they work?

Swedish massage involves the application of directed pressure to muscles against deeper muscles and bones, and the rubbing of muscles in the direction of blood flow to the heart. This technique relaxes the muscles, improves circulation, eliminates wastes, and stimulates the skin and nervous system.
Deep tissue massage focuses more specifically on problem areas, using greater pressure at deeper layers of the muscle.
Shiatsu is a Japanese form of massage that opens the body's energy meridians by stimulating specific acupressure points.

A physiatrist is a physician specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation. Physiatrists treat a wide range of problems from sore shoulders to spinal cord injuries. The focus of the specialty is on restoring function to people. Physiatrists treat acute and chronic pain and musculoskeletal disorders. Physiatrists offer a broad spectrum of medical services. They do not perform surgery, but may instead prescribe drugs, steroid and pain relief injections or assistive devices such as a brace or artificial limb. They also use diverse therapies such as heat and cold, electrotherapies, massage, biofeedback, traction and therapeutic exercise.

What types of problems does physiatry treat?

Phyisatrists treat a variety of musculoskeletal problems. They may see a person who lifts a heavy object at work and experiences back pain, a basketball player who sprains an ankle and needs rehabilitation to play again, or a knitter who has carpal tunnel syndrome. Physiatrists' patients include people with arthritis, tendonitis, any kind of back pain, and work and sports related injuries.

What kind of difference can seeing a physiatrist make?

Since it is the concern of the physiatrist to restore patients to maximum function, the difference they make is dramatic. In many cases, the physiatrist not only takes care of the acute problem (like from a broken hip or herniated disc), but also treats the patient until he returns to optimal functioning, usually without surgery.
The physiatrist will also teach the patient how to prevent the injury in the future.

Cosmetic Acupuncture

Also known as Facial Rejuvenation, Cosmetic Acupuncture, is a virtually painless, non-surgical method of reducing the signs of the aging process. Fine lines may be entirely erased, deeper lines reduced and bags around neck and eyes firmed. Cosmetic Acupuncture was performed on the Empress and the Emperor’s concubines as early as 960 AD. It is an effective treatment that has been featured in USA Today and MSNBC/Reuters as the equivalent of an Acupuncture face-lift.

How Does it Work?

It is based on the principles of Chinese Medicine, which involves the insertion of very thin disposable needles into the Acupuncture points on the face. This superficial insertion will increase the local circulation to the face and stimulate collagen production, which will fill out the lines and give firmness to the skin for a healthy, glowing complexion. Acupuncture works from the inside out. For example, after a careful examination of a patient who has premature wrinkles, the Acupuncturist might uncover high stress levels, poor digestion and weak elimination. The root of the problem is linked to these deeper issues so the practitioner will treat that as well as the wrinkles themselves. This is a holistic approach.

What is a course of treatment?

Each patient responds to treatment differently according to their age and lifestyle. A recent study published in the International Journal of Clinical Acupuncture showed that of 300 people who received facial Acupuncture, 90 percent saw marked improvements after one course of treatment. The length of time the results last depend on several factors, including your lifestyle, exercise regimen, nutrition plan and stress levels. In general, a well-managed regimen yields enormous benefits that go far beyond restoring a youthful appearance. Women who opt for facial Acupuncture often see improvements in mood, increased energy levels, better digestion and sleep cycles, and fewer hot flashes and night sweats. Cosmetic Acupuncture is traditionally done in a series of 10 weekly treatments for the best results. Once the series is done, we recommend a seasonal visit to maintain results. Some people will also come in to prepare for special occasions or simply as a treat.

How should I prepare for treatment?

The patient should arrive fifteen minutes early to fill out the medical intake form before the session begins. It is best to come dressed in loose, comfortable clothing. Long hair should be kept back with a headband or elastic. Skin should be washed free of makeup.

Chiropractic

According to The Association of Chiropractic Colleges, "chiropractic is a health care discipline which emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery. The practice of chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health."

The "founding father" of chiropractic, Dr. D.D. Palmer, developed a theory that spinal misalignment caused nerve pressure or irritation which in turn caused various ailments. He realized that the structure and condition of the body influenced how the body functioned and its ability to heal itself, without the use of drugs or surgery.

This simple philosophy has healed people and has prevented unwanted injury and illness for over a century!

For more detailed information, please visit: Dr. Barry L. Silverman's Chiropractic Website.

How it works

The nervous system consists of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. The brain is divided into sections and stores and receives an incredible amount of information. But this information needs a way to get in and out. Nerves provide a pathway for this information to travel, and the spinal cord is made up of bundles of these nerves. The spine both houses and protects the spinal cord.

Nerve dysfunction can result from any number of factors, such as falls, accidents, stress, tension, or over-use. These events can alter our "wiring" and create pain or discomfort in our bodies.

Doctors of chiropractic are trained to locate the source of the pain or discomfort (which may be far from the actual location where the symptom is occurring) and then we correct or adjust the joints in the body and set it up to heal on its own. The important thing to remember is that chiropractic success occurs by addressing the source of the problem, not just masking the symptoms.

What To Expect

After a thorough examination and a review of your health history, your chiropractic doctor will recommend a specific care program. If yours is a chiropractic case, this will include specific spinal adjustments.

The word adjustment describes hundreds of ways of using carefully directed and controlled pressure to restore spinal bones to a more normal position and motion. When spinal function is improved, nervous system function (health) can improve too.

After years of training, chiropractic doctors become experts at using just the right amount of force in the right direction. This may require a quick movement or in other instances a slow and constant pressure.

Acupuncture is a medical system that has been used to diagnose, treat and prevent illness for over 2000 years. Acupuncture is performed by inserting fine needles into points along the body, stimulating the flow of the body''s vital energy and functionality, known as Qi (pronounced 'Chee'). These acu-points connect to the network of meridians that flow beneath the surface of the skin, where they flow into the major organs. When the flow of Qi is disrupted, the body's systems become imbalanced. This is frequently experienced as illness or pain. The goal of acupuncture is to clear away these disruptions and revitalize the flow of energy in the meridians.

Acupuncture is proven to remedy acute or chronic ailments, relieve pain, enhance recuperative powers, and strengthen the immune system. It is also effective in soothing the mind and balancing the bodies hormones and chemicals.
What Can I Expect During a Treatment?

During the initial consultation, the practitioner will take a comprehensive history of health and illness. This provides a diagram of the overall state of the body, not just a particular symptom. The practitioner asks questions, takes your pulse, examines your tongue, and sometimes palpates your abdomen. The initial visit can last up to 90 minutes, including your first treatment. Subsequent visits usually last about 45 minutes and are done on a weekly basis depending on the patients need for treatment. The course of treatments can vary widely. Problems that have been around for a long time may take more treatments to resolve than ones that are acute.
Your treatment course will be determined after the initial consultation and re-assessed after each visit. For more answers, visit our Acupuncture FAQ.

Other things you may encounter during an Acupuncture session:

Moxibustion / Artemesia Vulgaris

The picture to the left demonstrates the use of moxibustion (moxa for short). Here, moxa is rolled into a ball, placed on top of the acupuncture needle and burned to transmit heat and energy down the needle into the Acupuncture point. The herb in english is called Artemesia Vulgaris and is used by TCM practitioners for its warming and tonifying characteristics. Burning it either on the needle or on a pedestal on the skin helps build the qi and rid the body of excess moisture. Patients usually enjoy this sensation of warmth and the heat never gets close enough to the skin to burn.

Cupping

Cupping is an old technique performed in both China and the west. Healers across Eurasia would take glass jars, heat them to create a vacuum, and place them on the upper back to relieve acute illnesses such as colds and fevers. The Chinese took this one step further and found that it could be used all over the body to invigorate the flow of Qi and to relieve tension and pain. It is often used for treating upper and lower back ache, chronic nausea & vomiting, sciatica, frozen shoulder and more. Changes in stiffness, pain and mobility can often be seen immediately.

Gua Sha

Gua Sha is a Chinese treatment, similar in effect to cupping. Gua stands for rubbing or friction. Sha stands for congested or stagnant blood at the surface of the body. When friction is applied in repeated, even strokes, the sha surfaces as small red petechiae. Usually a chinese soup spoon is used to create this effect. It is wonderful at treating stiff upper necks and backs and dealing with everyday stress. Additionally, gua sha's effects are immediate since the tension and pain release begins the moment the spoon touches the skin.

Tui Na / An Mo

Tui-Na is an oriental form of bodywork or massage that uses many forms of manipulation to directly influence the flow of Qi in the body. It complements the use of acupuncture and herbal medicine by allowing the practitioner to affect a whole channel of energy rather than just one point. It is notably useful in cases of frozen shoulder, IT band tightness or strain, low back strain, infantile diarrhea or constipation, and any kind of pain in children.
